“Freeway 280” by Lorna Dee Cervantes and “Once in a Lifetime” by Jhumpa Lahiri are heavily influenced by the writers’ cultural upbringing. Not sure what this is from, but based on the way this was worded, I would most likely assume that her mother was killed by the Russians. ~Hope this helps!
