This is called Vasocongestion

Vasocongestion refers to the swelling of bodily tissues due to the increase in vascular blood flow and an increase in blood pressure. Different things can cause vasocongestion in human, these include:

 • Illness
 • Sexual arousal
 • Menstruation
 • Strong emotions
 • Rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep)

Further Explanation:

In adult females, vasocongestion is one of the side effects of menstrual cramps. It causes pains in discomfort which varies among adult females. Vasocongestion plays an important role in the shedding of the lining of the uterus. However, during the menstrual cycle, abnormal vasocongestion can result in abnormal menstrual bleeding and anemia due to abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding.

Also, the emotion that follows embarrassment or anger can result in temporal vasocongestion of the face, also known as blushing. One of the chronic side effects of vasocongestion is the illness of rosacea, which affects the face, particularly the cheeks, chin, forehead, and nose.

It causes redness on the forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. However, the redness can turn out to be more intense over time. In certain circumstances, rosacea can also appear on the chest and neck.

Overall, vasocongestion plays a major role in sexual activities in mammals. It is also the force responsible for the hardening of the c litoris in females and the penis in males during sexual intercourse.
