Answer:

The correct answer to the question: At the beginning of "The Bet", the lawyer appears overconfident and greedy. At the end of the story, the lawyer appears:___, would be, A: Humbled and wise.

Explanation:

"The Bet" is a short story that was written by Anton Chekhov, and it was published in 1889. It tells the adventure undertaken by a lawyer and a banker in order to prove if life-imprisonment is worse than the death penalty. As such, the two make a bet and the lawyer sets out to prove his point. As the years in confinement pass for both, the lawyer starts to develop from an overconfident, and greedy, man, into someone who discovers the little value of money, and material things, and thus decides to write a letter to the banker telling him he renounces the prize of the bet, for having been imprisoned for 15 years. The banker, on the other hand, goes from good to really bad, and is almost bankrupt, so he decides to kill the lawyer so he does not have to pay the debt. However, the shock comes when the banker reads the note and realizes that the lawyer has renounced the money of the bet, because he has discovered there are more important things in life, including salvation. Thus, the lawyer matures into someone wise and humble.
