Zeus is the sixth child of Kronos and Rhea, king and queen of the Titans. Zeus is featured in many other Greek tales, however, they’re very different from one another. In most traditions, he is married to Hera, by whom he is usually said to have fathered Ares, Hebe, and Hephaestus. At the oracle of Dodona, his consort was said to be Dionee, by whom the Iliad states that he fathered Aphrodite. Zeus was also infamous for his erotic escapades. He’s also quite famous with the goddesses, Zeus had made love to one of the Pleiades, Maia, who gave birth to the tricky messenger of the gods, Hermes. Before Zeus was god of gods, his father, Cronus was the god of all gods until he was overthrown by Zeus. Zeus’s sons were Ares, the god of war, Hebe, the goddess of youth, and Hephaestus, the god of fire. Hephaestus limped whenever he walked, on some accounts it was because he was born lame so his mother, Hera, threw him off the side of Mount Olympus. According to others he acquired the limp because he interceded in a fight between Zeus and Hera, and Zeus took him by the foot and threw him from Olympus to the earth far below. In some stories Zeus was overthrown by Typhon, a gigantic son of Gaia, the Earth, and Tartarus. Typhon was born to avenge the Titans and depose the Olympians. Though some believe Zeus was undoubtably the victor.
