Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game" tells the story of a notorious hunter Sanger Rainsford and his encounter of being treated as a prey. The conflict between the hunter and the hunted seems to be the recurring theme throughout the story.

At the start of the story, Rainsford was told by his friend Whitney about an island "<em>Ship-Trap Island</em>" which every sailor tries to avoid. Trying hard to get a glimpse of the notorious island, Rainsford peered through "<em>the dark tropical night</em>" of the sea where they are sailing. He compares the dark humid atmosphere of the sea to the moist black velvet, where visibility is low and nothing can be seen clearly. Velvet is a smooth texture, slippery and moist but compact and hard to see through. It perfectly relates to trying to look through a velvety texture.
