This question refers to Amy Tan's short story "Fish Cheeks", in which she tells readers of an episode when she was fourteen years old. Amy had fallen in love with the minister's son, Robert. Instead of being happy when she found out her mother had invited the minister's family for dinner at Christmas, Amy was mortified. She knew the Chinese dishes would be a disappointment for an American family used to having turkey and sweet potatoes.

<u>In paragraph 3, the way Amy describes the menu makes it all seem quite </u><u>disgusting</u><u>. She uses words such as "black veins", "slimy", " stacked wedges of  rubbery white sponges", and "fungus". Such a description does not make this type of dinner seem appetizing at all! At this moment, Amy is looking down on her family's cultural traditions.</u>
