So, they actually did not understand what the government was doing in the Soviet Union. They were lied to and believed in every piece of propaganda that the Stalinist government published. Just as in the book Boxer is unfairly slaughtered, most working class people in the Soviet Union were brought down to hunger and poverty to the point of almost dying.
