The colonist's main problem with England was that they were taxing them without representation in the British Parliament.

The main reason why the colonists wanted independence from Great Britiain was because they were being unfairly taxed on numerous products. There were multiple different tax laws that Great Britain had put on products, like paper and sugar, which angered the colonists. Great Britain tried to justify their actions by saying that they were using the money to pay for the debts from the French and Indian war and British soldiers were protecting the colonists.

Overtime, the colonists started to boycott the products that contained the tax. Sometimes things even turned violent. Products were being burned in the streets and British merchants were being harmed. The colonists were angry they were being taxed and they had no say in the matter. They had nobody to vouch for them in the British Parliament, this is known as "taxation without representation."
