The redemptioners were European migrants who settled in America as indentured servants.
At first, most of them were English prisoners who came to America to serve their jail time until receiving the official pardon.
Later on, thousands of migrants who could not afford the trip settled as indentured servants to pay for the costs of the trip. After the trip was paid, they became free.
