Bartolome de las Casas came to Hispaniola to become a priest. He was part of the Dominican Order which required priests to spread Christianity among Indigenous people. Bartolome saw the exploitation of Indigenous people by the European. He felt remorse and become the defender of the rights of the indigenous people. He also tried to end the Encomienda system in America. He gave up landholdings and travelled to Spain in 1515 to appeal the Spanish Crown to stop the injustices that European colonists imposed upon the natives. Spanish behaviour towards the indigenous was hostile as they forced them to work and kill in conquests.
