Rome was building up their empire by expanding the empire and getting more land, but it was not so easy to get land because there were already other Empire's that had it. For example, Rome went into what is called the "Punic Wars" against the Carthage Empire for land, and Rome won the wars. Another war was against each other, the cause of the civil war against Romans was because of power, and Romans wanted power over each other so they could have the land that they fought for.
