Chapter 6 is the turning point in Edna’s life. Edna’s meltdown from a couple chapters before foreshowed this turning point. Edna breaks down in sobs for an unknown reason. Maybe she cries because of the incident Raoul because Mr. Pontellier questions her parenting skills? I don’t think that was the reason but I sure believe Mr. Pontellier pushed her over the edge. Just like every other women in society, Edna is forced to walk on eggshells to please everyone, especially her husband. This chapter is when she opens her eyes to the limitations set by the world she lives in, and she deliberately chooses to push those limitations by finding herself. She accepts the fact that society will never agree with her rebellion, but she knows once she starts living for herself, then she will be happier. This chapter also introduces the seas as Edna’s spark for independence. The sea awakens her sensuality and serves as a symbol of her open mind and soul.
