The industrial revolution changed society in many ways. First off, the population increased and cities started to build more and more factories for workers. While the population increased so did disease. Many people were living on the streets as there wasn't enough housing. Second, child labor did exist before the industrial revolution, with the increase in population children were working even more in industries. Children worked in the worst conditions and were paid less, and gained little education.
The Morrill Tariff of 1861 was an increased import tariff in the United States, adopted on March 2, 1861, during the administration of President James Buchanan. The Morrill Tariff raised rates to encourage industry and to foster high wages for industrial workers.
Americans began to see a link between farm problems and their own.
The Grange movement and the Populist Party had a strong influence on national politics. In 1896, the Republicans won the White House and the greatest number of seats in both the Senate and House of Representatives. But Democrats and Populists and additional smaller parties were not to be ignored. The People's Party (Populists) would eventually merge into the Democratic Party, and the Progressive movement got rolling in the early 20th century. Included on the Progressive agenda would be stronger support for the nation’s agricultural and working classes.
