Hippocrates of Kos was a Greek physician who lived from about 460 B.C. to 375 B.C. At a time when most people attributed sickness to superstition and the wrath of the gods, Hippocrates taught that all forms of illness had a natural cause. He established the firstintellectual school devoted to teaching the practice of medicine. For this, he is widely known as the "father of medicine."

Hippocrates was born around 460 BC on the island of Kos, Greece.

He became known as the founder of medicine and was regarded as the greatest physician of his time.Hippocrates

He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He held the belief that illness had a physical and a rational explanation. He rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by possession of evil spirits and disfavour of the gods.

Hippocrates teachingHippocrates held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts. He accurately described disease symptoms and was the first physician to accurately describe the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as epilepsy in children. He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness. He noted that there were individual differences in the severity of disease symptoms and that some individuals were better able to cope with their disease and illness than others. He was also the first physician that held the belief that thoughts, ideas, and feelings come from the brain and not the heart as others of his time believed.

Hippocrates traveled throughout Greece practicing his medicine. He founded a medical school on the island of Kos, Greece and began teaching his ideas. He soon developed an Oath of Medical Ethics for physicians to follow. This Oath is taken by physicians today as they begin their medical practice. He died in 377 BC. Today Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine".

"What is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be neces
Sergeeva-Olga [200]

This statement by James Madison argues that men are not perfect, and that human nature can be flawed. He believes government exists in order to control and limit the impact of these flaws.

One example is the separation of powers. The principle of the separation of powers states that power must be divided among different branches of government. The branches limit and control each other, and safeguard against the abuse of a tyrant. If people were not corrupted by power, or did not have a tendency to abuse power for their own gain, then the separation of powers would not be necessary. However, because human nature is flawed, these measures are necessary in government.
