Because of the bad farming land, the north made textiles, lumber, furs, mining, and shipping there way of life, which led to a very diverse economy. They did all of this without slave labor. They had immigrants to do the work, not only because the north needed the money, but the immigrants did too.
The northern economy relied on manufacturing and the agricultural southern economy depended on the production of cotton. The desire of southerners for unpaid workers to pick the valuable cotton strengthened their need for slavery.
The North developed economically much more than the South in the first half of the 19th century. Slavery was quickly abolished and the economy reverted to the rising industry to such an extent that during the Civil War about 80% of the industry in the USA was in the North.
