In the excerpt Tom taking advantage of his chance to pet his sorrows. He is allowing himself the chance and time to be sad and. He did not want anything or anyone to interrupt his mood. When his cousin, Mary, comes into the room, she is very cheerful and happy. He doesn't want her to ruin his sad move so he gets up and leaves so he can stay inside his "clouds and darkness."
