Explanation:

The shale acts a reservoir rock for the gas. This is why the gas collects and is found in it.

  • Originally, when sediments collects in a basin, the contain remains of life.
  • Inside the basin, with prolonged exposure, they decay and becomes lost.
  • When rapid burial and sedimentation occurs, they are cut of from the oxic environment that causes them to decay.
  • This leads to the formation of organic matter buried in rocks.
  • As compaction increases with burial, the organic matter is transformed under high temperature and pressure into kerogen.
  • When temperature nears that of the oil window, crude oil will form with a layer of biogenic gas on top of it.
  • The gas and oil will not stay but will follow a trap where they eventually end up being stored in a reservoir rock.
  • Such reservoir rock is shale. This is why the gas is found there
