The status of women declined and they were being given less freedom and no equality. The Neo-Confucianism was a period characterized by the rejuvenation of the old philosophies of Confucianism and a few new additions to it.

During the period, the equal status that the women had during the classical period was taken away gradually. Widow Remarriages were stopped and the practice of binding women's feet became prevalent.
