Jim Crow laws were meant to impose segregation of blacks from whites. Passed from the end of Reconstruction in 1877 through the mid-1950's, white southerners reasserted their dominance by denying African Americans basic social, economic and civil rights, such as the right to vote.

The laws are called after a white actor, who called himself Jim Crow, used black face make-up to imitate and ridicule freed Southern Slaves.
