Frederick Douglas is a well-known African American thinker, abolitionist and speaker.
In his celebrated memoir Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglas, he championed the rights of African-American slaves and was one of the leaders of the anti-slavery movement.
At one point in his life, he also worked as an adviser to Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War in America, and later became the first African-American to hold official political office.
Moreover, although he never formally accepted the nomination, he was the so-called "running mate" of Victoria Woodhull in the 1872 presidential campaign.
"A single word from the white men was enough — against all our wishes, prayers, and entreaties — to sunder forever the dearest friends, dearest kindred, and strongest ties known to human beings.
