French ruled in Haiti (before named "Saint-Domingue") from 1660. Though it was considered one of the wealthiest colonies of France, producing sugar and coffee mainly, the working force, that consisted of slaves, was treated harshly since the beginning and lived in very poor conditions. As a result, in 1791 the slaves rose up in revolt, and after a long decade of fighting and struggling, Haiti finally gained its independence in 1804, and slavery was abolished.

EXPLANATION  

At the end of the 18th  century and the beginning of the 19th  century, there was a revolution or a revolutionary wave of the Latin American War of Independence which resulted in several independent Latin American countries. This revolution was the result of the American and French revolutions which then had a profound effect on the British, Spanish, Portuguese and French colonies in America. Haiti, which is a French colony, became the first to follow the United States. This revolution lasted for thirteen years. It was from here that they gained independence.

In short, the Haitian Revolution was a successful anti-slavery and anti-colonial uprising by slaves who had freed themselves and then fought against the French colonial government in Saint-Domingue, which is now Haiti's sovereign state. The attack began precisely on August 22, 1791, and ended in 1804. Former slave Toussaint L'Ouverture emerged as the most charismatic hero, this resistance involved blacks, mulattoes, French, Spanish, and British.  

The Haitian Revolution became the only slave revolt that led to the founding of the State. They get two benefits at once; free from slavery and have a sovereign State. They were then able to manage their country with their own people.
