A metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things where you do NOT use like or as.  So B and C are out, because they both use 'like'.  D is not a comparison of two unlike things.  Therefore, 'A' is the clear answer.  Metaphors can be tricky.  Make sure you are looking for one item to be compared to something this is not like the other.  Another example, her skin was leather from having laid out for too long for so many days.
