Why were Romanesque churches designed in such a specific way? Why would you take the pilgrimage to see?

The advent of new technologies, as well as new heights in courage, allowed Gothic architecture. The flying buttress and special arches and vaults allowed new heights in construction and thinner walls, which in turn permitted glorious windows, since the walls no longer needed to be so heavy and thick.
