Why is interphase the longest stage of the cell cycle

The cell spends the most time in interphase preparing to divide. It is during interphase that it increases the number of organelles and size so that when it splits, both daughter cells have enough organelles to function 
it splits once the cell becomes so large that getting materials to the corresponding part of the cell uses more energy than the cell is making.People often misconcept prophase as the longest stage because it has many phases but then interphase has the longest duration.By Dr Takudzwa Chimhanda & Professor Denzel Muchazorega.
