Some young designers who spent time at the Basel School of Design came to the United States to teach and practice afterwards. __

___________, an American who studied at the Ulm Institute of Design in 1967 and 1968 and at the Basel School of Design from 1968 to 1970, taught courses at Yale University and the Philadelphia College of Art in 1970 and 1971. He addressed the problem of teaching the basics of typography through syntactic and semantic investigations, using such ordinary copy as a daily weather report (Fig. 22-19/23-18). He urged his students to make their work both functional and aesthetically unconventional. The 1973 publication of this work in the journal Visible Language had a widespread influence on typographic education in the United States and other countries.
