This peninsula is located on the southeastern Mexico and is separated by the Caribbean sea from the gulf. It has an approx 181,000 km square area and is entirely composed of limestone.

The economy is oriented to tourism and geologically is composed of the carbonate and soluble rocks. The climate of this place is vulnerable to large tropical storms and occurrences of the heavy flooding.
