When in 1989 the Hungarians rook down the fence between them and the Austrians, it caused a big migration wave from East Germany, when thousands of people fled the country and moved. This is was mainly due to two reasons. The first one, Hungary was changing, and it seemed that it had turned things around and that it has a bright future. The second one, East Germany was still separated from West Germany, and the country was in terrible conditions, and most of the people were very poor and unemployed.
