It is about Pygmalion, a sculptor, that makes an ivory statue which he names Galatea, representing his ideal of womanhood and then falls in love with his own creation. The goddess Venus brings the statue to life in answer to his prayer.

Ovid considered that nature is superior to art, as nature could not with his art compare. In his poem he states two opposing views of nature and its connection to art.
