The stalemate in the western front began after Germany failed to quickly defeat France.

Explanation:

 • The head of the German General Staff, Alfred von Schlieffen in 1905. drafted a German war plan.
 • The basic idea was to avoid war on two fronts .
 • It was planned that France would first defeat the West in 40 days and then move all forces east against Russia .
 • The Germans penetrated neutral Belgium and began to threaten Paris itself .
 • There was a battle on the Marne, in September 1914, in which German penetration by French and British troops was stopped.
 • Schlieffen's plan for a lightning war failed and Germany had to wage war on two fronts.

Further explanation

The Western Front or Western Theater was the main theater of war during World War I. Following the outbreak of the war in August 1914, the German Army attacked the Western Front by first invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control over important industrial areas in France. The height of the attack dramatically changed to the Battle of Marne. Following the race towards the sea, the two sides dug along a winding line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to Switzerland bordering France. This line is essentially unchanged in most wars.

The inevitable progress of the Allied forces during the second half of 1918 convinced the German commander that defeat was inevitable, and the government was forced to demand ceasefire conditions. The terms of the peace were agreed upon by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

The Battle of Berlin was one of the last battles of the European Theater of World War II. The large Soviet army under the leadership of Georgy Zhukov and Ivan Konev attacked Berlin from the east. This battle lasted from late April 1945 until early May.

Several wars during World War I and II involved Germany in it:

 • First Battle of Marne
 • Battle of the First Ypres
 • Gas warfare
 • Air warfare
 • Spring attack
 • Fall attack
