The difference between speed and velocity is that velocity is speed with a direction vector associated with it. It's that direction vector that makes them different. Let's back up a bit and review. Speed is displacement (distance traveled) per unit time. Velocity is displacement (distance traveled) per unit time in a given direction. The "directionallity" associated with velocity makes it a vector quantity, while speed is a scalar quantity.

Norgay started the narration about
the climb from himself but then narration is shifted to Hillary’s climb and
focus is on the events of Hillary’s incomplete account. Later he resumed the
narration of the adventure providing pauses and bringing in Hillary time and
again. It seems like the point is being made that the climb would not have been
possible with anyone’s single efforts rather it was a joint effort regardless
of whose step was the first step.
