They were part of the contract which permitted them to work for a few years in America.  After the end of the contract, they became free,  receive a small plot of land and tools to start a life as a farmer. As the demand for the indentured servants increased, it became harder to get them, and they were expensive. To overcome the problem of servants and to maintain a regular supply of it, slavery introduced in America.
