Read the excerpt from "A Modest Proposal." A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I highly esteem,

was lately pleased, in discoursing on this matter, to offer a refinement upon my scheme. He said, that many gentlemen of this kingdom, having of late destroyed their deer, he conceived that the want of venison might be well supply'd by the bodies of young lads and maidens. The underlined portions of the excerpt are examples of verbal irony because this man truly is virtuous and patriotic, so Swift is surprised by the man’s support of eating children to solve the poverty issue. anyone who is truly virtuous or patriotic would not suggest using children for food, so Swift means the opposite of what he says. this man is a close friend of Swift’s, so Swift is just expressing his personal thoughts and feelings about the man’s character. anyone who tries to better his country must be virtuous and patriotic, so Swift is simply explaining what is already obvious to the reader.

Answer:

B). Anyone who is truly virtuous or patriotic would not suggest using children for food, so Swift means the opposite of what he says.

Explanation:

Verbal irony is demonstrated as one of the most commonly employed literary devices in which there is a sharp contrast between the literal and implicit meaning of the words used by the author.

"A Modest Proposal" is one of the best satires of all time as Swift employs various literary devices like irony, exaggeration, or humor to critique and comment upon the inhumanity of Irish people who were selling their children for food to resolve their economic problems and the brutal British policies.

In the given excerpt, the underlined portions employed by Swift exemplify verbal irony as they convey a very positive idea about the probity and loyalty of Irish people in the literal sense but implicitly, Swift is critiquing and commenting upon the Irish 'gentlemen' who 'destroyed their deer' and 'supply'd by the bodies of young lads and maidens'(selling children for food). Thus, <u>option B</u> is the correct answer.

Is it true that a snake wont die till the sun goes down?
Inessa [10]

<span>There is some truth to this myth backed up by science explanation. A snake’s nervous system will still be functional for approximately 10 to 12 hours after they are pronounced dead. So probably that is where the myth or saying “a snake wont die til the sun goes down” came from. Because 10 to 12 hours is enough time from the morning for the sun to set down, and the nervous system will be completely dysfunctional and only will be then that the snake is truly dead. So the best way to ensure the snake does not bite you or attack you is to kill it, cut off its head and bury it so that its nervous system will be readily dysfunctional.</span>

Which evidence from the text supports the conclusion that
KiRa [710]

Answer:"How scaped am I killing when I crossed you so? / O insupportable and touching loss!"

"My heart is thirsty for that noble pledge. / Fill, Lucius, till the wine o', Roswell the cup."

Explanation:

In the <em>"Tragedy of Julius Caesar"</em>, Shakespeare's play, a group of conspirators gathers with an ultimate goal to murder Caesar.

Brutus and Cassius, the two main conspirators, disagree multiple times throughout the play. However, these particular lines from Act IV, Scene III, prove that they are ultimately able to overcome their arguments. In this scene, the two of them are discussing Portia's death. Cassius is surprised by the fact that Brutus, although devastated by Portia's death, remained calm and did not kill him during their quarrel. In the second line, also uttered by Cassius, wine is a metaphor for Brutus's love, which Cassius wants to get. He tells Lucius he wants a full glass of wine.

How does a CENTRAL IDEA develop over the course of a story?
Svetach [21]

Answer:

Explanation:

A central idea is like a lesson. Usually the idea is carried through a character, for example, Harry Potter and his friends teach us to persist through the hardest of challenges. But that central idea can't just be there in the beginning, it has to develop over time until Harry completes his hero's journey. Central ideas are also further explained at the end of the book when it ties everything together.
