I depends on the situation. In many cases the yearn for survival is one of the biggest factors.  money, food, and shelter are all part of surviving.

Answer:

I think the reason behind someone committing a crime varies between people, and crimes. For example, petty theft like taking small things from a grocery store could be because a person is desperate, or it could be something like kleptomania, which is a mental disorder. More violent crimes like ra pe, could stem from an abusive childhood, or mental disorders, that lead a person to do something awful, and feel as though they won't get caught. Robbery or other, similar crimes, could be because people feel as though they are above the law, or won't get caught, and get addicted to the adrenaline rush and power that may come with crime.
