In the open letter written by Christian minister and social activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, he directly refers to the clergymen that had publicly commended the Birmingham police force for keeping "order" and "preventing violence" after a nonviolent protest that ended up with the incarceration of Dr. King and several other African American protesters. Dr. King contrasts the violent behavior of the police forced, and how they used the police dogs to bit unarmed protesters who were not participating in any violent act, how the same police force gave an inhumane treatment to the protesters that were in the city jail, and how they even showed violence against women and children of color. Dr. King wrote that part of the letter to show how mistaken the clergymen were, by protecting and defending the police force instead of the real victims of the situation.
