Next, imagine that you are a Serbian-born Janissary named Dragomir Magdalec living in Istanbul around the year 1600. Returning t

o the barracks after a day's training, you get into a conversation with your comrade, a Hungarian named Istvan Lazlofi, about current events and how they relate to your lives as soldiers. Complete the following dialogue by selecting the correct answers from the dropdown menus.
YOU: That was some good sparring today. I feel like I could take on the entire Holy Roman Empire all by myself. But you know, I've been thinking about more than fighting lately.
ISTVAN: What do you mean?
YOU: Well, the sultan has been _____ the number of Turkish cavalry in the military. That means he's more dependent on us as a fighting force, which means we have leverage to try to get some of those reforms we've been asking for. You know, we can start to do things that have been prohibited against us.
ISTVAN: Oh, you mean like _____ ?
YOU: Well yes, but I was thinking about something more tangible. I'd like to get involved in ______. This crop from the Western Hemisphere,______ , is becoming so very popular here, and I think there is a lot of money to be made in supplying it.
ISTVAN: Ah yes, we can convince the sultan that this will ______ .
YOU: Naturally! That's the idea. Now, let's go get something to eat.

xxMikexx [17]

Although the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) had strong popular support when it passed both the House and the Senate in 1972, it failed to become a constitutional amendment because the feminist movement had made so many gains in eliminating gender discrimination.

Failure of Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)

 • The feminist movement had achieved so much in the fight against sexism in areas like employment and education that it did not necessarily seem necessary for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to pass both the House and the Senate in 1972, despite the fact that it had strong public support at the time. As a result, the ERA did not become a constitutional amendment.
 • The Equal Rights Amendment ultimately failed to be ratified by the required 38, or three-fourths, of the states by the deadline set by Congress because of a conservative backlash against feminism.
 • Because a state's legislature must pass it through both houses in the same session in order for it to be considered ratified, it failed in those states.

How were the views of France and the United Kingdom similar at the end of WW1?
Allushta [10]

The war between Britain and France was virtually over. King Edward VII visited France in 1903 and won the hearts of the French people by speaking great French and acting graciously everywhere he went. He even gave a famous actress gallant compliments in her native tongue (this kind of thing goes a long way in France). The Anglo-French Entente was ratified in less than a year. The hatred of Edward by Kaiser Wilhelm was another cause (who was his uncle). In truth, the English had already proposed an equivalent entente to Germany in 1899 and 1901, but the Germans had rejected it because they thought it was a ruse. At a dinner with 300 guests in Berlin, the Kaiser made a public statement "He is the devil! You simply cannot comprehend what a Satan he is!" He was irate that he couldn't intimidate or win Edward over, envious of his fame, and worried about what he thought were English designs to "encircle" Germany. But it was for the Belgians, not the French, that Britain allied with France in World War I. Britain had committed to defend Belgium in return for its Continent-wide neutrality. The British intervened to defend them when Germany invaded Belgium without cause (Belgium had done nothing to deserve it) and started massacring civilians.
