After the reconstruction, a tax-supported school system was introduced.  Also, the economy shifted from a few agriculture and industrial-based products to a wide variety.  Finally, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments gave hope to the colored people (in both the North and South) that racial equality would one day exist.
