While an argument can be made for the first, I would say the passage best supports the statement that "Men often considered women to be their personal property." Throughout the passage, not once was society mentioned nor implied upon, making the first lesser to the last by evidence. Helmer mentions that his wife is now like a "child" to him, heavily implying control over her. Later on, be mentions how he will serve as her will and conscience, dictating her decisions like a master to a slave or a parent to a child.
