Monopolies grew so much during gilded ages than they  influenced the goverment via lobbying and other corrupt tactics.

Explanation:

Gilded age was a time of big economic growth for American companies and workers, even  many  foreigners from other parts of the world were attracted to go to The United States looking for better opportunities. That was the era in which monopolies like the Standard Oil Company were created and reached their peak. They were big  players in the country and started to influence goverment officials to mantain favorable conditions for them such as free-market policies, low tariff and taxes and less goverment intervention on private transactions. Their tactics ranged from lobbying to bribbery and were criticized by writers such as Mark Twain.
