Answer: In one of the races Hippomenes was given three of the golden apples of the hesperides, from the goddess of Aphrodite, when Hippomenes dropped them; Atalanta took his chance and picked them up and when he did he lost the race. Their son Parthenopaeus was later one of the seven who fought aginst the Thebes after the death of king Oedipus.
