Troy is a legendary city in the province of Troas in northwestern Asia Minor and the site of the Trojan War. According to legend, Troy was besieged and eventually conquered by the Greeks. The Trojan War is depicted primarily in Homer's Iliad, but also later and similar texts as the Epic Cycle. Today, "Troy" is the name of an archeological site, the traditional location of the Homeric Troy, near the coast of what is now Canakkale province in northwestern Turkey. Troy was long considered a fictional site, until the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1870 found the ruins of the city.
