Here's an example

9 = 3 * 3 So we say 3 is the square root of 9. Its the number which when multiplied by itself gives 9. 9 is the square of 3.

Also 4 is the square root of 16 because 4 * 4 = 16. Also -4 is a square root of 16 because -4 * -4 = 16.

The symbol used for square root is √. (√16 = 4).

Most whole numbers do not have a square root which is a whole number for example try finding the square root of 10 on your calculator . Mine gives me

3.16227766. Actually this is an irrational number ( it goes on without bound)s.

In the UK we call √10 a surd . In the USA its called a radical.

The square root of a number would be the inverse of an exponent.

so let’s say you have 9 to the 2nd power, or 9^2, it would be 81, because 9 multiplied by itself 2 times (hence the exponent, second power) would be 81.

now, the square root of 9 would be the number that, multiplied by itself 2 times, would be equal to 9.

3 times 3 is equal to 9, and since 3 is being multiplied by itself two times to get 9, the square root of 9 is 3.

does this make sense now?

When solving an ______, use inverse operations to undo the operations.
s2008m [1.1K]

Answer:

equation

Step-by-step explanation:

Inverse operations are used to solve simple algebraic equations to more difficult equations that involve exponents, logarithms, and trigonometry. Mathematically, inverse operations are opposite operations. Addition is the opposite of subtraction; division is the opposite of multiplication, and so on.
