Close to the election of 1860, there were cases of profound divisions which existed among Americans over the future course of their country over the South's institution in pertaining to slavery.

This cause rifts among the Democrats in which some of them seceded to help create Republicans together with some other liberal parties like the liberty party which are anti slavery. Republican party was founded in 1854 as a coalition opposing the extension of slavery into western territories, the party fought to protect the rights of African Americans after Civil War.

The case of this split between southern and Northern Democrats over slavery propelled Republican candidate of Abraham Lincoln to win the 1860 election, after the party has made slavery an important issue and created a motion that they were anti slavery.
