The character of Chaucer serves as our guide to the action. Sometimes Chaucer narrates like he's really there in the tavern, just meeting these pilgrims for the first time, and we feel like we're right there with him. At other times, though, Chaucer is a narrator who seems to know way more than he should. For example, he tells us that, when the Shipman wins a fight, he murders the loser by throwing him overboard, or that the Reeve is stealing from his master. Now is that really something these people would tell Chaucer on first meeting him? And how does Chaucer know so many details of the pilgrims' day-to-day lives? At these moments, Chaucer acts much more like an omniscient, or all-knowing, narrator, than one who's truly in the heat of the action. The reason for this choice could be that verisimilitude, or making things seem like real life, was not as important to a medieval author as it is to authors today. Instead, the narrator might choose to tell whatever he wants to tell to serve the purposes of characterization.

Full Question:

Read this excerpt from a short story. The set committee had labored for weeks constructing a background to recreate a 1950s New York City neighborhood. The students in charge of costumes had scoured thrift shops for well-worn denim and leather. The cast had rehearsed lines and performed their songs until each member could recite their part forwards and backwards. But nobody wanted to perform for an empty house. The only remaining hurdle was the promotion of the play. As Pine Valley High’s first spring production, the student body would need to be convinced that West Side Story should not be missed.

What complication is introduced in the excerpt?

The cast members struggle to memorize lines.

The costumes do not reflect the play’s time period.

The set committee must repair the background. T

The students must work to promote the play.

If you were to create a modern-day epic hero, what profession would you use to base him/her?
pshichka [43]

Answer:

I would base it off of a cop or detective because they are based on a modern day hero of sorts.

Explanation:

Cops have gear to use and have the knowledge to apprehend a "bad guy." The detectives are kind of like the people who direct the hero when they need to find a "bad guy."
