In a comparative essay, body paragraphs develop the ideas introduced in the introductory paragraph. In this case, if the first paragraph mentions different literary genres, the body paragraphs will refer to each of them separately and describe them in detail so that they are examined in contrast with one another. For example, if the introductory paragraph refers to genres such as horror, romance and science-fiction, then each next body paragraph must develop each genre.

The primary functions of body paragraphs in a comparative essay on genres are to introduce the broad topic of the essay in the first paragraph and the following body paragraphs will provide smaller, individual supporting details about the main topic. First paragraph  can cover the definition and importance of genre and the following body paragraphs can detail types,classification and specific details of each.
