Explanation:

In reflecting on the earlier days, the narrator projects the opportunity that he got from his mother's sacrifice. Though he may have not realized it at that time, his realization now shows his reflection.

Also, by stating that <em>"Because of her efforts to ensure he had a good education, he was able to rise above his circumstances"</em>, he knows and appreciates the opportunity that he got from his mother's hard work and sacrifice.

Thus, this <u>narrative addresses the two topics of opportunity and personal reflection. </u>

Is the group of words a simple sentence, a compound sentence, or a run-on sentence?

It is a run-on sentence. You have a complete sentence (verb and a noun), I like chicken, and then you have another complete sentence, I hate broccoli. If you had put an and between these two sentences you would have had a compound sentence.  Hopefully this helps.
