Carbon sequestration refers to the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon in the soil. Carbon dioxide gas is the common form of atmospheric carbon . Sufficient amount of soil carbon is important for the proper growth of vegetation in the soil.  

Through the process of photosynthesis plants and trees perform biological carbon sequestration. When the number of plants and trees decreases the percentage of soil carbon decreases and percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases. Fossil fuels are reserves of carbon in soil.

It is when they are consumed carbon changes to carbon dioxide and reach the atmosphere. When a land is converted to agricultural land the carbon content of the soil reduces.

Replenishing the carbon  content can be done by following several methods like leaving the plant leftovers after harvest in the field itself, use of manure as fertilizer, planting perennial crops etc.
