Abraham Lincoln stated in 1858, "I am not nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races." Explain why Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation for two reasons: one was military, one was to abolish slavery. He was trying to gain an advantage over the south and win the war.
