Mawi Asgedom arrived the United States as a refugee from Ethiopia when he was just seven years old. Before he came to the U. S, he was in a refugee camp in Sudan for three years where he described his experience there as greatly challenging in his book, "Of Beetles and Angels"
His experience in Sudan was similar to life in Ethiopia because he was escaping from a civil war back home.
