Well...

Before Pearl Harbor happened the United states wanted to stay neutral and not fight anymore or at all (Hint why they were neutral) . All that changes on Dec 7, 1941 when the Japanese did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor killing lots and lots of people causing the US to start getting ready for war, thus leading to the united states abandoning their position.
