It could also symbolize an important memory whether it was good or bad. It could also symbolize a historical marking. It could represent the years of long and hard history. It could symbolize a lot, the most important though is the memory close to you heart. If we are talking about history than it symbolizes the world's memory at that time. And if we are talking about Earth... we are talking about life.
